S. Korea appoints new ambassador to China

SOUTH Korea today named a career diplomat as new top envoy to China, the presidential office Cheong Wa Dae said.

Lee Kyu-hyung, South Korea's former ambassador to Russia, has been designated as new ambassador to China, replacing Yu Woo-ik.

"We expect Lee, with his personal network, will play a big role in expanding our strategic partnership relations with China," said Hong Sang-pyo, a senior presidential aide.

Lee is also expected to contribute to reducing tension on the Korean peninsula through enhanced cooperation between South Korea and China, Cheong Wa Dae said in a statement.

President Lee Myung-bak, meanwhile, has also appointed vice foreign minister Shin Kak-soo as new ambassador to Japan, and Kim Sook, a former spy agency official, as a top envoy to the United Nations.
