SFDA warning: Colored contact lenses are harmful to eyes

China's drug watchdog has suggested halting the production and import of colored contact lenses because the unsupervised products may impair users' eyes.
The popular cosmetic lenses will be listed as medical apparatus and their sales will be strictly regulated with manufacturers required to get production licenses, the State Food and Drug Administration announced.
The administration warned people that the colored lenses, made without quality supervision, may contain bacteria and inferior dye and are harmful their eyes.
The colored contact lenses have gained great popularity among young Chinese since 2008 as they can change their eye color and iris pattern to look prettier.
The administration is still drafting a regulation on the production and sale of colored contact lenses, the Beijing Times reported today.
