Sad news puts Yao top of the microblogs
A POPULAR Chinese actress has become the world's most-followed entertainment star on the country's equivalent of Twitter, with more than 5 million followers.
The surge in interest was partly because of the news that Yao Chen has divorced her actor husband after a seven-year marriage.
Yao, 31, who shot to fame in "My Own Swordsman," a Chinese martial arts version of the hit sitcom "Friends," knocked American talk show diva Oprah Winfrey off the top spot yesterday with her microblog on sina.com.cn, a popular Chinese website portal.
The website crowned her "Microblog Queen," after she surpassed Winfrey, who had recorded more than 4.95 million followers as of yesterday on Twitter.
China has more than 53 million microblog users.
However, the rise in followers was not a cause for celebration for Yao. It came on the day the actress said she finished the legal procedures needed for her divorce from Ling Xiaosu, 30, her college sweetheart and co-star in several popular dramas and TV series.
"Though we chose to end our marriage, we will still be the most trustworthy one in each other's life. The time we shared in the past makes us believe love and marriage is always worth pursuing," the couple said in a joint statement on Sina.com.cn yesterday.
Dubbed a "model couple" in Chinese entertainment circles, Yao and Ling delighted their fans and the media with the story of their romance and ensuing marriage.
In an early interview, Yao said the pair often quarreled during their time at the Beijing Film Academy.
However, Yao came to see Ling as the apple of her eye after he handed her an umbrella in the pouring rain. They fell in love and were married after they graduated in 2004.
The couple were happy to talk about their married life to the media, which made news of their divorce all the more surprising.
A claim that Ling might have had an affair with actress Tang Yifei after they starred in a TV drama in 2010 was denied by Tang in an interview with movie website M1905.com.
Yao's movie version of "My Own Swordsman" hit Chinese cinemas on Thursday, another event that helped to push the actress to the top of the entertainment news headlines.
