Safety checks after fatal factory fire in E. China

Companies in Shouguang, Shandong Province, will be subject to fire safety checks after employees were killed in a factory fire in the city, authorities said Tuesday.

A fire broke out on Sunday evening at a carrot packaging workshop belonging to Longyuan Food Co. Ltd.. Eighteen people died and 13 others were injured.

Shouguang Mayor Zhao Chunxu said the city government was spearheading a fire inspection campaign at all local factories. Companies that fail the test will have to cease production until all hazards have been addressed.

The government, he said, has organized 18 working groups to deal with the aftermath of the fatal fire. The working groups will communicate with the families of the deceased and those that have been injured.

The provincial government has assigned a team to investigate the cause of the accident, he added.
