Safety inspection of gas and oil pipelines ordered
A NATIONWIDE safety inspection of oil and gas pipelines was ordered yesterday after an explosion killed 62 people in Shandong Province on November 22.
The inspection will continue through March next year and include review planning, site selection, design, management and routine maintenance, according to a notice issued by the work safety committee of the State Council, China’s Cabinet.
The committee ordered inspectors to check evacuation contingency plans by pipeline operators and local governments.
The inspections were ordered after the explosion of a section of an underground pipeline in Qingdao. The Sinopec pipeline had been in use since 1986.
Underground pipelines for drainage, electricity, communications, natural gas and heating have increased rapidly during urbanization.
