Sailors back from Thailand
Dozens of Chinese sailors returned home yesterday escorted by a Chinese patrol ship after being stranded in northern Thailand following attacks on cargo ships early this month.
Eleven ships with a total of 78 crew sailed into Guanlei Port in Yunnan Province yesterday afternoon.
Twelve Chinese sailors were confirmed dead and one is missing after two cargo ships - Hua Ping and Yu Xing 8 - were attacked and hijacked by unidentified armed men on the Mekong River on October 5.
As a safety measure, 164 sailors have been living aboard 26 ships on the Mekong River in Chiang Saen since the attacks. The other 15 ships are on their way to Guanlei and will arrive later.
Chinese and Thai authorities are cooperating in investigating the attacks, according to officials.
A Chinese team composed of officials from the ministries of foreign affairs, public -security and transport arrived in Chiang Rai Province in northern Thailand on Saturday to help with the investigation.
