Salt buyer loses 10,000 yuan

A MAN who bought three truckloads of salt at the height of last week's panic-buying - insisting he never intended to make a profit out of it - has ended up losing almost 10,000 yuan (US$1,525) reselling the goods.

"Some kind-hearted people and restaurant owners brought the salt at current market price," the man, surnamed Guo, from Wuhan City, capital of Hubei Province, told Wuhan Evening News yesterday.

Guo, a restaurant owner, sold the salt at between 2 to 2.6 yuan per kilo, having paid 4 yuan per kilo.

"I've learned a huge lesson," Guo said.

Guo rushed to stores to buy iodized salt which he thought could help counter radiation from a tsunami-hit Japanese nuclear plant.

It cost him 27,000 yuan to buy the salt and transport it home. But just after he unloaded the salt, the government spiked the rumor that salt could ward off radiation and ensured a steady supply.

Guo's story was picked up by media outlets, but he received fierce criticism as web users accused him of trying to make a quick buck from reselling salt.

But Guo claims he was just fooled by the rumor and never intended to make profit from selling the salt.
