Sane man freed after 16 years in institution
OFFICIALS in central China's Hubei Province have freed a man held in a mental hospital for 16 years, following online claims he was perfectly sane and was being detained for making corruption allegations.
Yesterday, Guo Yuanrong was discharged from a hospital in Shiyan City where he was detained in April 1994. At that time, Zhuxi County police said he was acting insanely and may pose a danger, said the Guangzhou-based Yangcheng Evening News.
But Guo's sister, who was not named, said he was trapped in hospital after he reported corrupt officials to higher authorities, the newspaper said.
The family are considering asking for compensation as Guo could have been left with mental health problems as a result of his incarceration, Guo's sister said.
Guo was described as "perfectly sane" last year by fellow patient Peng Baoquan.
Peng was placed in the same hospital last April after being detained for taking photographs of a protest near a hotel where police lodged, the newspaper said. He was quickly freed after an online campaign by his family.
Last week, Peng posted Guo's story online. To give the story more impact, he pretended to be a fictional daughter of Guo, offering to marry anyone who helped her father.
The story received more than 100,000 clicks within a day on Chinese popular online forum Tianya.cn.
