Sanitation workers clear large amount of garbage from Tian'anmen Square

SANITATION workers in Beijing cleared 47 tons of garbage from Tian'anmen Square during the recent 8-day national holidays, authorities said today.
The figure was up 24.8 percent from the same period last year, according to the Beijing Municipal Commission of City Administration and Environment.
The commission has increased its manpower to ensure cleanliness in the square during the holidays, sources with the commission said.
Relevant departments have also increased patrols of expressways around the capital at the end of the holiday amid an expected traffic boom.
Large amounts of garbage discarded by travelers at scenic spots and along expressways during the holiday have triggered heated discussion online.
A photo posted online just after the holiday showed vast quantities of garbage piled on a beach in south China's coastal city of Sanya, one of the country's most popular tourist sites.
About 50 tons of garbage were left on the 3-km beach after a moon-watching celebration on the night of the Mid-Autumn Festival, which fell on September 30.
