Santas from Finland to greet shoppers

A Hangzhou department store invited five certified Santa Clauses from Finland to help enliven Christmas atmosphere in the store.

There are only 50 certified Santa Clauses in Finland and the store paid nearly 1 million yuan (US$164,000) to hire the five Santas, each over 1.9 meters tall, with silver-white moustaches and big bellies.

A qualified Santa not only has a big frame, long moustache and a good command of English, he also needs to learn child psychology, make-up skills, and have strength to pull a reindeer sleigh.

There are at least six Santa Clause training schools in the United States and Hong Kong just opened its first Santa Clause school in March this year.

After graduation, an American Santa Clause can make US$15 to US$35 an hour, or US$8,000 to US$12,000 in one holiday season, depending on popularity.
