Sanya no place for rip-off restaurants

SEAFOOD restaurants which rip off customers are being targeted by authorities in Sanya City in south China's Hainan Province.

The crackdown follows a case where a group of 23 tourists were charged 27,000 yuan (US$4,095) for common dishes including squid, fish, eggs and crab last December, Xinhua news agency said yesterday.

The group still refused to pay the bill when Tingchao Renjia Seafood Plaza offered a 40 percent discount but a payment of 10,000 yuan was agreed after officials from the city's bureau of industry and commerce arrived.

The restaurant's boss, Chen Dawei, admitted overcharging, saying that a 5 kilogram rope used to tie the crab had been included in the weight of the crab. But an investigation found that most food in the restaurant was double the price it should have been.

Its license was revoked after an investigation showed the crabs it sold were not from where the restaurant stated.
