Saved by a vest made of sausages

A 63-year-old man said to be a mental patient fell from his sixth-floor balcony in Chengdu, capital of southwest China's Sichuan Province, but was saved by a most unusual ploy - he was wearing a vest made of 40 ham sausages.

The man, Wang Deyong, wore the "ham sausage vest" tied up with plastic bags and bundled around his chest and back with linen as he fell. The 20-meter drop caused the ham sausages to crush, protecting Wang, who suffered only slight injuries to his head and shoulders, the Southern Metropolis Daily reported yesterday.

Wang was seen shouting: "I was chased by someone who fired at me with a machine gun," while lying on the pavement, his head bleeding.

During the fall on Friday, Wang hit a tree and a tricycle loaded with plastic foam before landing on the ground, as large broken branches scattered around him. He was taken to a hospital and was reported in good condition.

Wang's relatives quoted him as saying that he slipped on the balcony and fell by accident.

Wang denied suffering from mental illness.

A physics teacher told the report that Wang's survival was partly attributable to the tree and the tricycle but that the thick ham sausage vest provided the final protection.
