Scalpers seized at Bird's Nest
BEIJING police have seized 30 members of a gang who monopolized ticket sales in the National Stadium and charged nearby dealers protection fees.
The gang had earned more than 400,000 yuan (US$58,824) in two months, Xinhua News Agency reported today.
Police said the gang used force to prevent anyone else from scalping tickets at the National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest.
Some gang members sold tickets to visitors at the market price while others crowded the ticket office to prevent tourists buying official tickets, the report said.
The ring leader, surnamed Wang, began to trade tickets two months ago after selling drinking water outside the stadium. He confessed to police that he sold more than 2,000 tickets a day.
