Scammer gets 8 years for sending fraud messages

A man who sent 4.5 million fraud messages in nine months but failed to cheat anyone was sentenced to eight years by a Beijing court. It is China's first court ruling made on the number of fraud messages, local media reported.

The Haidian District People's Court heard that the man surnamed Bian and three partners sent out fraud messages from their hideout in Zhengzhou, Henan Province between June 2010 and March 2011.

Bian sent 4.5 million bulk mails while his three partners sent 3.5 million, 1.3 million and 1.01 million respectively. The three men were sentenced to seven years behind the bars, today's Beijing News reported.

They lied to recipients that they had won a lottery or their online bank system needed an updated and they should submit their personal information.

According to the amended Criminal Law that came into effect in April 2011, the court can put an offender to jail for sending more than 5,000 fraud messages or making more than 500 fraud calls.
