Scandal: Red Cross to press charges
CHINA'S Red Cross is to press charges against the woman who claimed to be general manager of "Red Cross Commerce" and boasted of her lavish lifestyle online.
Wang Rupeng, secretary general of the Red Cross Society of China, said the job title and the organization didn't exist.
"The incident has put great pressure on us and the Red Cross branches across the country," Wang wrote in his blog yesterday.
But he also admitted that the strong public skepticism about activities of the charity could, to some extent, be the fault of the Red Cross itself.
He said the organization was developing an online donation management platform on which donation information would be publicized. It is expected to be launched by the end of this month.
Meanwhile, the woman whose activities had raised doubts about the charity and how it spent its money, has been revealed as the girlfriend of a former board member of a company which organizes charity activities for the Red Cross Society of China.
Wang Jun, who is said to be 46, resigned from the board of Zhonghong Bo'ai Asset Management Co on June 26 after the scandal came to light.
He admitted giving luxury sports cars and designer handbags to 20-year-old Guo Meimei, according to Weng Tao, CEO of Zhonghong Bo'ai. The comapny is an investor and operator of a charity project initiated by the Business System under the Red Cross, a legal branch of the charitable organization in the business sector.
The project involved putting Red Cross mobile service stations, or buses, into communities with the company earning profits from advertising on the buses.
Weng told the Beijing News yesterday that the project was still in the planning stage but he would be describing it in detail in his blog.
"If someone is willing to make an offer, I would sell it with 30 percent off. It's now a hot potato," Weng said.
"According to Wang, Guo is his new girlfriend. They just knew each other early this year," Weng told the newspaper.
Wang said Guo overheard his conversation with business partners about the project and made up the Red Cross Commerce executive title because she thought the Red Cross was "very famous," Weng said.
Netizens had earlier found that one of Guo's sports cars was registered under Wang's name.
The identity of Guo's boyfriend was finally uncovered after her flaunting of her riches triggered a public outcry over possible malpractice or corruption.
There was speculation Guo was the mistress or relative of a high-ranking Red Cross official.
