Scandal over exam points for sale claim

AUTHORITIES in Liaoning Province are investigating claims that a number of students who sat this year’s national college entrance exam, or gaokao, purchased bonus points to enhance their chances of a top score.
Suspicions were raised last weekend when it was revealed on the Internet that 87 students from Benxi Senior Middle School in Benxi City in the northeast province had been awarded national-class athletics certificates, entitling them to 10 extra points in the examination.
The awards are supposed to be given only to students who demonstrate exceptional sporting ability, while similar certificates are awarded to students who excel at science.
However, the number of recipients from the Benxi school raised suspicions as it was just two less than the total number awarded to students in five other Liaoning cities combined, namely Jinzhou, Liaoyang, Chaoyang, Tieling and Huludao, Henan Business News reported yesterday.
According to an unnamed student at the Benxi school, a teacher made it clear to parents that the extra credits were available to buy, the report said.
The certificates cost from 40,000 (US$6,400) to 80,000 yuan, it said, adding that all proceeds went into the pockets of exam referees and officials.
On Wednesday, Liaoning’s education authorities gave students the chance to give up their awards if they felt they were not earned. As of 3pm Thursday, 74 of the 168 pupils across Benxi to have been granted an award had surrendered them, People’s Daily reported.
Of the 74, 58 were from Benxi Senior Middle School, it said.
On Monday, the head of the middle school, Li Yucheng, was ordered to take all of the recipients of the sports awards to the provincial capital Shenyang for re-testing, the Legal Daily reported.
The results have yet to be released, Legal Daily said.
