Scandals cancel annual uni boat race

THE annual boat race between Peking and Tsinghua, China's two best universities, is canceled indefinitely after scandals blighted the 10-year-old event.

The Peking-Tsinghua match was modeled after the Oxford-Cambridge boat race, and started in 1999. But it came to a premature end this year as the fun and sportsmanship was replaced with underhand tricks and fiercer competition each year, China Youth Daily reported today.

The event started as a yearly opportunity for the two universities' alumni to get together. But soon each side found defeat too bitter to swallow, especially in front of its famous graduates.

In 2008, Tsinghua University won the race, but the result was canceled because the judges found several professional rowers in its team. The following year, Peking University's championship was canceled for the same reason.

Both universities confirmed the event would not be held this year and the teams have stopped recruiting new rowers. But they said the rowing teams were still in training,

When asked why the event was canceled, both universities said Beijing has no rivers suitable for training and said the event's cost is becoming unaffordable, the report said.

When Peking University won the first race, the two teams were coached by the universities' own teachers. Now, both teams hire national level coaches and screen athletes rigorously to find rowers.

Peking University rower Guan Lei told the newspaper that he never had any vacation during his four years in college life. Every spare minute was spent on training for the squad.
