School apologizes over 'green scarf' humiliation

THE principal of a primary school in Xi'an, the capital of northwest Shaanxi Province made a public apology today for judging students by the color of their Young Pioneer scarves.

The school introduced green scarves, lower in grade compared with red scarves worn by the Chinese Young Pioneers, last month to motivate poor performers.

Teachers gave the green scarves to students with poor scores or naughty behavior. But the practice has drawn criticism from both parents and educators who regard the green scarf a stigma on children.

Many students took off their green scarf and hid it in the schoolbag as they left the school.

The humiliating practice was called off earlier this week by local authorities.

Chinese Young Pioneers are also called "Red Scarves" as the red scarf is the symbol of the country's largest children's organization.
