School bus checks in wake of accident
CHINA is starting a nationwide school bus safety check and pledging to spend on buses in the wake of an accident that claimed the lives of 19 kindergarten pupils, the country's safety watchdog said yesterday.
The Work Safety Committee Office, under the State Council, or China's cabinet, urged local education departments to close any safety loopholes immediately.
Local governments should spend more on school buses, while creating detailed safety regulations, the office said.
Some 21 people - 19 children and two adults - died and 43 were injured this month when a nine-seater school bus illegally carrying 64 people collided with a truck in northwest Gansu Province.
Meanwhile, all 12 people - including 10 children - on a kindergarten bus that collided with a truck in central China's Henan Province yesterday afternoon are safe, emergency services officials said.
