School expels students with long hair
A HIGH school in southern China has expelled 32 students for having hair longer than their collar.
The school in Foshan city, Guangdong Province, gave an ultimatum to its art class students - cut their hair or keep their ponytails and leave, Guangzhou Daily reported today.
The girls worried that short hair would hurt their chances of auditioning for their college entrance exams.
A vice principle of the high school surnamed Liao said the rule on school hairstyles was decided in March to improve the image of the school. All pupils were told about the new rule, he said.
Students said that it would be better to improve the school with more effective teaching rather than focusing on hairstyles.
Lawyer Lu Baochang told the newspaper that there are no regulations specifying whether state-owned high schools could make rules covering hair styles, but said he felt that expulsion went too far.
