School leaders sacked after student raped in dorm

MOST of the leaders of a rural school in Shaanxi Province were sacked after lax security contributed to the rape of an 11-year old girl in a school dormitory.

Along with the school's principals, the head of Hengshan County's education bureau and top town officials were also punished to various degrees, Zheng Dongshan, a county official in charge of the case, told Chinese Business today.

The 11-year old girl was sleeping in her school dorm, which can't be locked, with 10 other young girls when she was raped on May 21, the newspaper reported.

The victim suffered a badly injured vagina. During morning exercises the next day, a teacher noticed the girl's blood soaked through two pairs of trousers.

The girl's roommates said the rape happened at around 11:00pm on May 21. A man came into their dorm and checked all the girls first using the light from his cell phone screen.

The man then pressed on the girl and raped her, the newspaper reported.

One theory suggested the rapist knew and targeted the victim, the report said.

It was reported that most teachers knew the girls' dormitory could not be locked yet no one did anything to improve security.

The leaders of the school signed an agreement with the girl's family. They agreed to give the family 265,000 yuan (US$ 38,795) in exchange for the family not appealing to higher authorities or accepting media interviews.

The deal aroused anger in the online community after a family friend familiar with the agreement posted the terms on an Internet forum.

Hengshan police said the agreement would not influence their investigation.

The rapist remains at large.

The girl was the top student in her class. She has not left home since the rape occurred.

Her psychiatrist said she could have permanent emotional trauma.
