School must pay girl 40,000 yuan after face scarred by fan
A COURT ordered a middle school in southern Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region to pay 40,000 yuan (US$6,551) for medical care and other compensation after a student’s face was disfigured by a ceiling fan that fell in a classroom.
The fan fell onto a female second-year student surnamed Huang, causing a cut between her eye to mouth.
The girl, whose name was not disclosed, was sent to a hospital but was left with a six-centimeter scar on her face after the October 8 incident in Lingshan County, Xinhua news agency reported today.
Huang became depressed in the wake of her disfiguration. Her parents took the school to court, asking for compensation.
A lack of safety checks and regular maintenance triggered the fan to fall, the court said, adding that the school should take the blame. The school was ordered to cover Huang’s medical bills of 20,000 yuan and compensation for mental distress of 20,000 yuan.
