School open only a year then demolished in resort plan
A RURAL primary school in central China’s Hunan Province has been demolished to make way for a tourist resort - just a year after it opened. The school in Yanling County, funded by a charity group and the local education bureau, first admitted pupils in August 2012.
It was fitted with modern facilities and had bathrooms and a playground. A local education official estimated total investment was more than 1 million yuan (US$164,100).
Villagers were delighted with their new school, as for the previous 20 years children had been educated in a rundown house on a hillside, Legal Daily reported yesterday.
But in December 2012 - just four months after the school opened - the county government signed a contract for a 10-billion yuan project to create an international tourist resort. And the new school was in the area where the development was to be built.
The local education bureau, which owned the school, signed a contract with the county government to relocate it.
Locals tried to stop the demolition but their efforts were in vain, with some ending up injured in protests.
Village children are now studying in prefabricated buildings while their new school is still under construction.
