School shut down after teacher burns 10 kids
A KINDERGARTEN has been shut down in Shaanxi Province after its director burned 10 children as a punishment for being unable to recite simple stories.
Director Xue Tongxia was detained and the school's license revoked over the weekend, Shaanxi-based Sanqin Daily reported.
Xue said she had placed hot coal tongs on the children because she was "in a bad mood."
The 10 children, aged 5 and 6, at the Mogou Kindergarten in Xunyang County suffered slight burns to their hands, arms and backs, but are recovering after treatment, reported the newspaper.
Some children told the newspaper of their ordeal.
"Ms Xue burned my hands three times and said she would burn us the next day as well if we told our parents," said one victim, a six-year-old girl, nicknamed Xin Xin.
"Xue is very strict. Some of my friends were so scared that they wet their trousers," the newspaper quoted the little girl as saying.
According to parents, they were informed by a teacher at the kindergarten last Thursday that Xue had burned their children with coal tongs at around 9am last Tuesday.
Faced by furious parents, Xue admitted she had punished children in this manner as they were "too naughty" and she was "in a bad mood and finally lost control" after they could not recite children's tales.
Xue told the newspaper that on Tuesday she punished children with tongs used to place coal in a brazier that heats the kindergarten.
Xue said some children had also wet themselves, making her more anxious.
"Some were being very naughty, so I tried to scare them by waving the tongs at them," said Xue.
"I didn't think the tongs were hot, as they had been cooling, but I totally lost control and burned their hands."
She told the newspaper that she immediately regretted her actions when she saw the burns on the children's hands.
Xue's mother said since the incident her daughter has been prevented several times from committing suicide.
According to other teachers at the kindergarten, Xue had been an excellent teacher for four years and no one had complained about her.
The county's education bureau is investigating with police and said Xue faced "severe punishment."
