Schoolgirls swallow sleeping pills to test loyalty

FOUR schoolgirls in the eastern Anhui Province have recovered after they swallowed nearly 100 sleeping pills to test friendship, a local newspaper reported today.

The four 12-year-old girls said they had a dispute over friendship and decided to take sleeping pills to prove each other's loyalty on March 10, the Market Star reported.

These teenagers managed to get a bottle of sleeping pills and shared the tablets, gulping them down with orange juice. One girl, a class monitor, took 34 tablets.

A teacher at the school gate saw they came stumbling and checked if they were sick. One girl told the truth and they were rushed to the hospital for immediate treatment. Luckily, all the girls recovered soon and were discharged yesterday.

Their action has shocked their parents and teachers. One teacher surnamed Qian said the girls, including two class monitors, behaved well at school.

The school authorities said a psychological therapy would be given to these students, the report said.
