Scotch spirit to get legal protection

SCOTCH whisky will get special brand protection in China in a move expected to boost sales of the spirit at the expense of counterfeit versions, the British government said yesterday.

Business Secretary Vince Cable will sign an agreement tomorrow during a visit to Beijing so that the name Scotch whisky is restricted to the drink produced in Scotland, officials said.

The Scotch Whisky Association has been lobbying for such a step for three years. The group estimates that exports to China could double over the next five years from an annual figure of 80 million pounds (US$130 million).

Chinese producers have jumped in to take advantage of the boom in sales, with at least 200 imitation products identified in the past two years, say media reports.

"Scotch whisky is a brand recognized worldwide so it is important all consumers should have confidence that the product they are buying is genuine," Cable said in a statement.

"This agreement means greater legal protection in China, which will only help strengthen export sales of this successful Scottish product," he added.
