Sea levels increase in past 30 years
SEA levels along the country's coast have risen 2.6 millimeters every year for the past three decades, leading to more marine disasters, according to documents released by the State Oceanic Administration yesterday.
The two documents, which cover China's sea level and marine disasters, said marine disasters in 2010 resulted in 137 deaths and disappearances, with direct economic losses totaling nearly 13.3 billion yuan (US$2.03 billion).
Economic losses caused by marine disasters between 2006 and 2010 increased 18 percent compared to those between 2001 and 2005, the documents said.
The administration's Liu Kexiu attributed the rising sea level to global warming and land subsidence.
"The over-exploitation of groundwater and massive construction of high-rises in coastal areas led to land subsidence," Liu said.
