Search for 10 missing after capsize

RESCUERS continued their search yesterday for 10 people missing after a boat capsized in a river in southwest China's Guizhou Province.

Search efforts were hampered by swift currents and low visibility in the Qingshui River, said Li Xiaogang, a diver with the rescue team. "We will go all out to search for those missing despite of the difficulties," said Li.

Relatives and friends waited anxiously by the rescue headquarters, hoping for news.

The boat was carrying 46 people ?? 44 passengers, the boat owner and ticket seller ?? and set sail for Liuchuan Town in Jianhe County, Miao-Dong Autonomous Prefecture of Qiandongnan, for a rural market at 8am on Tuesday.

The passengers are mostly farmers from four villages. The boat has a registered capacity of 18 people.

The boat quickly sank after hitting a reef at around 10am, throwing all those on board into the water. Passing vessels saved 36 people.

Liu Zhongquan, 28, the boat owner, has been detained by police and the area closed to shipping.
