Search for bottles of tainted yogurt

AUTHORITIES in Hubei Province's Xiangfan City in central China are looking for 50 bottles of corn yogurt believed to contain excess melamine, China National Radio reported yesterday.

The batch produced by the Hubei Yuanshan Dairy Co is in plastic bottles and numbered 20100615. Subsequent tests showed that the yogurt could contain 4.8 milligrams of melamine per kilogram, almost double the permitted amount, the city's industry and commerce administration said.

After consulting company records, the administration suspected that the batch went to Xiangfan but none had been found at the city's major retailers and wholesale markets.

The authorities were not certain whether the yogurt had been distributed to other areas, the city's official daily newspaper reported.

Melamine can cause reproductive damage or kidney stones, with a surplus of the material in animal feed and milk making protein content appear higher than the true value.

China has been taking action since 2008 to reduce the practice of melamine adulteration.
