Second death of Guangzhou marathon reported
Guangzhou marathon runner Ding Xiqiao died early this morning in an ICU ward in Zhongshan University's No. 6 Hospital after he collapsed about one kilometer from the finishing line of a 5-kilometer mini marathon held on November 18.
Today's Southern Metropolis Daily said Ding's death report said he suffered sudden cardiac death during the race and was revived by cardiopulmonary resuscitation before he developed respiratory failure.
The Guangzhou Sports Bureau said in a press release that the medics who were deployed along the route ran to his rescue on foot because the road was full of runners, making it impossible for the ambulance to reach him.
The bureau called the police for help and Ding was rushed to the hospital's ICU ward with no further delay.
Another runner, Chen Jie, who collapsed at the finishing line of a 10-kilometer mini marathon on the same day in Guangzhou, died in the hospital the next morning.
