Second icebreaker to be built to boost exploration

UNDER a plan to step up polar research and exploration, China will begin construction of the nation's second icebreaker late this year, said officials from the Polar Research Institute of China located in Shanghai yesterday.

The nation's current Xuelong icebreaker will undergo a major renovation next month.

Design of the new vessel is underway. It is to be designed by foreigners while it will be built in China, officials said.

"We hope the new icebreaker can be put into use by 2014, when we will have a fleet with two polar exploration boats," said Han Yanji from the institute.

China also plans to build its fourth Antarctic station, officials said. China has three research stations in the Antarctic - Changcheng, Kunlun and Zhongshan.

The new station is expected to be located between Zhongshan and Kunlun.
