Security HQ for Mekong River
CHINA will host a multinational Mekong River security headquarters and is willing to dispatch experts to help train security personnel in Myanmar and Laos.
The Public Security Ministry says the center will be located in the Chinese river port of Guanlei in Yunnan Province. A ministry statement said it will be staffed by officials from China, Myanmar, Laos and Thailand.
The statement, released late on Wednesday, gave no date for this, although coordinated river patrols are to begin before December 15.
This comes after 13 Chinese sailors were killed in attacks on two cargo ships in early October in the Thai section of the river in the lawless Golden Triangle region. Nine Thai soldiers turned themselves in over the killings.
