Security stepped up before games
ALL luggage is now subject to X-ray checks at subway stations in Guangzhou, as security is beefed up for the Asian Games.
Scanning machines have been set up in all subway stations in the capital city of south China's Guangdong Province. All luggage are being checked for prohibited items from Thursday to December 22. Random checks will also be conducted on passengers by inspectors, Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.
Police said the whole X-ray process will not take longer than 40 seconds, as long as passengers are cooperative. They will check small bags manually with metal detectors.
Nearly 1,000 armed police soldiers have been deployed to keep order and patrol subway stations. The police said they expect the peak in traffic volume will come in November, when free public transport will be provided to residents.
The strictest security checks are at Haixinsha Station, which is close to the opening ceremony venue of the Asian Games. Three X-ray machines are at each check point along with metal detectors, explosive detectors and other security devices, the report said.
The police reminded passengers not to bring white spirit weighing more than 2 kilograms, pesticides, air fresher and any other flammable and explosive items into the subway.
Meanwhile, Guangzhou's housing authorities have asked property management companies to light buildings to illuminate the skyline for aerial filming during the Asian Games.
Property management companies need to turn on all indoor and outdoor lights in public areas between 5:25pm and 9pm during the November 6-12 period in certain areas of Guangzhou, especially in Asian Games Town and Guangzhou University Town, to cooperate with China Central Television's aerial filming.
CCTV will film the city's night skyline before the games start to highlight the change.
Authorities have ordered all property management companies to provide assistance to workers who come to set up or test lighting devices. Those who interfere will be penalized.
Guangzhou will host the Asian Games from November 12 through 27 and the Asian Para Games from December 12 through 19.
