‘Seek common ground and shelve differences’
CHINA and Britain need to seek common ground while shelving differences and respecting each other’s core interests, Chinese President Xi Jinping told British Prime Minister Theresa May.
Meeting on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Xi told May that bilateral relations should be cultivated on the basis of “consolidating strategic mutual trust.”
“Both sides should uphold the principle of mutual respect and equality, and respect each other’s core interests and major concerns,” Xi said.
China is high on the list of countries with which Britain seeks a free trade deal after it leaves the European Union. Xi said the two countries should deepen cooperation in the finance and nuclear energy sectors.
