Self-drive rail services are back on track
THE Beijing Railway Administration will provide a car transportation service during next month’s Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation meetings to help local people make the most of a bonus holiday.
Beijing will host the 2014 APEC Economic Leaders’ Week from November 5-11, with the leaders’ meeting starting on November 10.
In a bid to ease traffic congestion in the city during the event, the State Council earlier approved a six-day holiday for schoolchildren and government workers from November 7-12.
The new rail service — which will link the capital to the provinces of Zhejiang, Sichuan, Jiangsi, Hunan, Hubei and Shaanxi — will give car owners the chance to take self-drive holidays outside Beijing.
A similar service provided during the National Day holiday on a Beijing-Hangzhou bullet train route proved very popular, it said.
Trains will transport vehicles out of Beijing from November 4-6 and return them on November 13-14, The Beijing News reported yesterday.
The service, which is available to vehicles with fewer than seven seats, will cost between 1,400 yuan (US$228) and 3,100 yuan, depending on the size of the vehicle and distance traveled, the report said.
