Senior Hubei official under probe

China is investigating a senior provincial official for graft, the Communist Party’s corruption watchdog said yesterday, making him the latest target in the corruption crackdown.

Guo Youming, a vice governor of the central province of Hubei, is “suspected of serious discipline violations” and is being investigated, the Party’s Central Commission for Discipline Inspection said in a one-line statement on its website. It gave no further details but the term discipline violations is generally used to denote corruption.

Guo is a long-time official in Hubei where he served in the water management bureau and as Party secretary in Yichang City, near the US$59-billion Three Gorges Dam project.

His official profile on the Hubei government website describes him as being in charge of the province’s land and resources management and a project to divert water from China’s flood-prone south to its arid north, among other responsibilities.

Guo is the latest senior official to be investigated since President Xi Jinping took power last November with promises to fight the widespread corruption that fuels public anger.

Authorities have announced a series of investigations into senior and lower level officials across the country this year following Xi’s vows to fight corruption and extravagant, wasteful work styles.

Authorities have already announced the investigation or arrest of a handful of senior officials, among them former officials of oil giant PetroChina, in what appears to be the biggest graft probe into a state-run firm in years.
