Senior cop in Chongqing arrested for assisting mafia gangs

A senior police officer in Chongqing Municipality in western China has been arrested on charges of taking bribes and protecting mafia-style gangs.

Zhou Qiong, former chief of the public security bureau of Jiulongpo District, was accused of abusing his position to tip off gangsters ahead of police raids and covering up their crimes between 2001 and 2006.

Zhou came to know the heads of two big gangs in Yubei District when he was a senior police officer in the district, Chongqing Evening News reported today.

One of the mob boss Chen Zhiyi was sentenced to death for a variety of gang crimes including rape, organizing gang, vandalism, illegal gun trade and drug trade.
