Senior cop on trial for bribes, sex offenses
A FORMER senior police officer in the eastern province of Anhui yesterday stood trial on graft charges and alleged sexual offenses.
Bai Yuling, ex-riot police chief of Anhui's Bozhou City, was suspected of accepting bribes, embezzling public funds, bending the law for interests, rape, and holding a huge amount of unaccounted assets, said the indictment.
The Bozhou Intermediate People's Court heard the case.
According to the indictment, Bai accepted 1.53 million yuan (US$224,000) by taking advantage of his duties over the construction of police facilities, handling criminal investigations and power over personnel.
Subordinates and local businessmen offered him bribes every month for fear of retaliation, media reports said.
Prosecutors also accused Bai of embezzling confiscated money, including part of the amount he seized during a crackdown on gambling.
The indictment said he took bribes to protect suspects from being criminally investigated.
Bai was also charged with having 2.54 million yuan of unaccounted assets and committing at least two sexual offenses.
He used to be a frequent visitor to sauna parlors both for business and pleasure.
He often went to local amusement facilities in the guise of cracking down on gambling and prostitution to extort money from the operators.
He availed himself of free sexual services at those facilities and even raped a cashier and a teenager forced to offer prostitution service, according to the indictment.
Not content with the free services, he also insisted on cash payments each month, said a local sauna operator. Each bath houses in Bozhou gave Bai cash.
He took advantage of free services from almost every local prostitute, according to earlier media reports.
