Senior cops fired over torture case

FOUR senior police officers in northwest China have been sacked over a torture case that led to the death of a murder suspect during police questioning.

Liu Xiaoyong, director of the Public Security Bureau of Xihe County; Tian Hu, deputy director; Yang Qixing, head of the bureau's criminal investigation team; and Li Hongzhou, the bureau commissar, have been fired.

The Public Security Department of Gansu Province said these officials neglected their duties as leaders, which led to the torture of 27-year-old He Yong, who died early this month during police questioning.

Two police officers in Xihe had been detained for allegedly torturing He to death. They claimed He died of a heart attack.

He's uncle claimed he saw his nephew covered with nearly 80 wounds when he attended his autopsy in a hospital on April 2.

The young man was being questioned for collaborating with three other men over the robbery, rape and killing of a 17-year-old high school girl. The case had shocked locals.

An officer said He started frothing at the mouth during the interrogation on April 1. The officer told them the young man suffered heart disease and the police fed him two tablets and then sent him to hospital for emergency treatment. He died in the hospital.

He Jinku, however, said it was impossible because his nephew never had a history of heart problems and that he was healthy when he had a physical at a hospital in Shanxi Province earlier this year.

He's family members were deterred by local officials when they tried to get an explanation for his death.
