THE arrest of two senior police officers was approved by southwestern China's Chongqing Municipality's legislature yesterday.
The standing committee of the People's Congress in Chongqing voted to approve the Chongqing Municipal Procuratorate's arrest of Peng Changjian and Xu Qiang, who are also deputies of the congress.
Peng was deputy chief of Chongqing's public security bureau, while Xu was deputy head of the Dianjiang County government and the county's police chief.
Chongqing Procurator Yu Min said Peng was suspected of taking bribes and Xu suspected of embezzlement and taking and offering bribes.
Peng allegedly took 820,000 yuan (US$120,000) and HK$100,000 (US$12,900) in bribes and offered assistance to illegal business operations.
Xu allegedly offered the former executive deputy director of the Chongqing public security bureau 280,000 yuan in 2006 for promotion. He is said to have accepted a car worth 138,000 yuan last year from a police officer in Dianjiang who wanted promotion, and to have embezzled 80,000 yuan in January this year.
