Senior officials in Shaanxi and Hainan provinces under investigation

A SENIOR political advisor in northwest China’s Shaanxi Province is being investigated on suspicion of severe violations, China’s top Party disciplinary watchdog said today.

Zhu Zuoli, 59, vice chairman of the Shaanxi Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, has played an important role in the province’s economic issues since 1982.

When he was elected vice chairman of the provincial CPPCC in January of last year, he remained as director of the Shaanxi Provincial Development and Reform Commission.

Officials said yesterday that Ji Wenlin, deputy director of south China's island province of Hainan, is also being investigated for suspected violations.

The 47-year-old, described as the youngest deputy governor in Hainan’s history, was the first provincial-level official to be investigated in 2014.

The Party has undertaken a nationwide anti-graft campaign since President Xi Jinping took the helm of the Party in November 2012. Xi has called for a crackdown on "tigers" and "flies," referring to corrupt officials of both high and low rank.

Since then, more than 20 provincial and ministerial level officials have been toppled. They include Li Chuncheng, former deputy Party chief in the southwestern province of Sichuan; Guo Yongxiang, former vice governor of Sichuan, and Li Chongxi, former top political advisor for Sichuan.

Ji was said to have a close relationship with Guo as both had served in high-ranking positions in Sichuan’s government, according to Hong Kong's Takungpao website.
