Senior top court official ousted for corruption

A FORMER vice president of the Supreme People鈥檚 Court (SPC) has been expelled from the Party and removed from public office for serious disciplinary and legal violations, the Party鈥檚 anti-graft body said yesterday.

Xi Xiaoming, 61, was described by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection as 鈥渄isloyal and dishonest,鈥 and accused of breaching Party principles by covering up his personal affairs and failing to adhere to the rule of law.

Xi took advantage of his position to seek profit for his relatives, and took bribes to assist people involved in legal disputes, the commission said.

He also violated frugality rules by attending banquets that were paid for with official funds, and violated secrecy rules by leaking information about legal cases and court proceedings, it said.

The anti-graft body announced in July that it had begun an investigation into the official.

According to the Supreme People鈥檚 Procuratorate (SPP), Xi has been placed under 鈥渃oercive measures鈥 鈥 a term that could involve summons by force, bail, residential surveillance, detention or arrest 鈥 and has been ordered to repay all of his ill-gotten gains.

He is also the subject of a full criminal investigation, the SPP said.

Xi joined the nation鈥檚 top court in 1982 as a clerk, after working as a police officer in Shenyang, capital of northeast China鈥檚 Liaoning Province. He was made a vice president in 2004.

He is the second person holding the rank to be investigated for corruption.

In March 2010, former SPC Vice President Huang Songyou was sentenced to life imprisonment for taking bribes and embezzlement.

According to a report by Caijing magazine, Xi has close ties to coal tycoon Zhang Xinming, who was questioned by police in August last year during an investigation into alleged mafia-type activities and money laundering.
