Sentenced Public Security official appeals to higher court

A FORMER high-ranking official of the Ministry of Public Security has filed an appeal against his 12-year jail term for taking nearly 2 million yuan (US$295,290) in bribes, including 1 million yuan from disgraced GOME tycoon Huang Guangyu.
Xiang Huaizhu, 46, former deputy director of economic crime investigation bureau of the ministry, has made the appeal to the Beijing Higher People's Court after he was handed down the verdict on July 23, the Beijing Times reported today.
His personal assets of 1 million yuan were confiscated.
Xiang was accused of abusing his position to cover business frauds of several companies, including Huang's GOME Electrical Appliances Co and Beijing Pengrun Real Estate between 2006 and 2008.
His wife Li Shanjuan, 47, didn't appeal to her one-year-and-seven-month jail term for helping Xiang take bribes of 170,000 yuan.
Huang, once the richest man on the mainland, was sentenced in May to 14 years for bribery, illegal business dealings and insider trading.
