Serial killer says sorry
CHINA'S most prolific serial killer, who murdered 13 people during a 14-year run, told an appeal court that he regretted everything he did and would donate all his organs as redemption.
Cheng Ruilong, 37, was sentenced to death in February for the killing and robbing rampage he waged since 1996 in six provinces.
The gentle-looking man said in Foshan Intermediate People's Court that he appealed the previous death sentence not for leniency, but to clear up some details so that law could live up to its name of absolute justice, Guangzhou Daily reported yesterday.
Cheng and his lawyer disputed four murder and rape cases in the first trial. The court did not rule after the hearing on Wednesday.
Cheng said he did not participate in the killing of his first victim, a wealthy real estate businessman surnamed Li in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, whom he and two accomplices robbed in 2007. He said he did not know Li died until he read the indictment.
This first crime prompted him to make a bloody 14-year escape with a stolen police gun and a number of fake identities.
He said he did not kill two victims in a 1997 robbery case in Zhuzhou, Hunan Province, whose bodies were never found, and neither did he mean to kill anther victim in Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, though he stabbed her in the belly to stop her from calling police.
For a rape and murder case in Jiangxi Province in 1999, Cheng said he did not kill the eighth grade girl, but only raped her.
