Serial killer seized after 9 years and 9 deaths
THE serial killer who murdered nine people and injured five and was on the run for nine years has been caught in central China's Hubei Province, China News Service reported yesterday.
Yuan Danping, 41, has confessed to committing eight burglaries, killing nine victims and injuring five others in the provinces of Hubei and Hunan. He stole several mobile phones and about 30,000 yuan (US$6,740) in cash.
Police seized him in a village teahouse in Gong'an County, Hubei Province on April 5 after he committed another burglary on March 23 and killed a couple by slammed their heads while they were asleep. Yuan stole 4,000 yuan in cash and some jewelry before setting the bodies on fire to destroy any evidence.
Later Yuan used Hu's mobile phone to call the police saying his family members were murdered and gave the address. The dubious phone call caught the police's attention and Yuan's accent betrayed him.
Police in Hunan and Hubei provinces worked together to hunt down the serial killer whose criminal acts bear a lot of similarity.
In September 2003, Yuan killed a couple and burned their bodies. Five months later, he slain another man in the same town and burned his body. In early 2005, Yuan murdered two more victims in a burglary and burned down their house before the police arrived.
Survivors said the burglar wore a headgear and chose to act on rainy nights.
