Serial killer suspect on trial over 13 bodies

A MAN accused of being one of the most prolific serial killers in China stood trial today on charges of murdering 13 people including police officers, rich businessman and teenage girls.

Cheng Ruilong, a 37-year old Guangdong Province native, allegedly committed robbery, rape, and extortion across six provinces since May, 1996, Guangzhou Daily reported today.

He is also charged with raping an eighth-grade schoolgirl before killing her in 1999, prosecutors said in Foshan Intermediate People's Court in Jiangxi Province. His trial is expected to last two days.

Cheng was sentenced to seven years in prison in 2005 in Jiangxi Province for robbery, serving time under the alias Zhou Quan.

Not long before his release, fingerprints released by China's Ministry of Public Security linked the prisoner with the man at the top of their most-wanted list.

Cheng was said to have used more than a dozen aliases and cut his face to make himself unrecognizable, the court heard.

He allegedly confessed all his crimes to police after they promised he could see his son.
