Serial killer's lover gets 5 years for harboring him
THE girlfriend of a serial killer who killed 10 people in eight years was sentenced to five years in prison for harboring a fugitive by a court in Chongqing yesterday.
Zhang Guiying, 21, was convicted of harboring Zhou Kehua after he fatally shot a woman in the head during a robbery outside a bank on August 10 and later killed a railway police officer when he fled, the Shapingba District People's Court said.
The woman kept about 60,000 yuan (US$9,654) in Zhou's robbery proceeds for him and was aware of his crimes, the court said.
She informed Zhou of police movements by phone until he was killed by two policemen in Chongqing four days after the robbery, the court said.
Zhang also was fined 10,000 yuan. She made no appeal.
Prosecutors asked that Zhang receive a four to seven-year prison sentence and be fined.
Her parents were present at the hearing and declined to comment. Her father walked out of the court with a blank expression and her mother tried to strike at photographers, the Chengdu Evening News reported.
Zhang met Zhou in April last year while she was working in a hair salon in Yibin City in Sichuan Province.
Later they lived together and moved to Chongqing City, the court said.
At the trial, held in January, Zhang pleaded not guilty, claiming she knew nothing about the killings.
Zhang claimed that she had been told that Zhou was the "famous serial homicide thief" in June last year, but she didn't take it seriously, thinking it was just a joke.
