Serious toilet cleaning

WORLD Toilet Organization experts are training a group of selected cleaners to better sanitize toilets in Hainan Province, a popular tourist destination.

Twenty cleaners from Haikou and Sanya, the two biggest cities in Hainan, will be given three days of training.

They are being taught special cleaning tips and how to do minor repairs in line with World Toilet Organization public toilet service quality standards.

The international organization, together with the provincial government and a Singaporean toilet culture group, initiated the training ahead of the 2011 World Toilet Summit and Expo from November 22 to 24 in Haikou.

Chen Xiaojing, deputy head of the Hainan Department of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, said: "The joint training program will help improve professional levels of toilet cleaners and promote the standardized management of public toilets."

The scenic island of Hainan plans to turn itself into a world-class travel destination, luring global tourists with tropical styles, seafood, quality service and good facilities.

First-rate toilets are one key aspect of modern facilities, Hainan officials believe.

Travelers from overseas often grumble about the cleanliness of public toilets in China.
