Several hurt as people protest metal project in their city

SEVERAL people were injured yesterday as police tried to disperse a crowd of people outside the Shifang City government building in Sichuan Province to protest the construction of a metal processing facility in the vicinity.

Fearing hazardous pollutions from the factory, residents gathered on Sunday evening to demand a halt to the project, local news website Newssc.org reported today.

The crowd gathered again on Monday morning and broke into the government building and smashed its windows.

The crowd grew larger in the afternoon and some protesters threw water bottles and flowerpots at policemen, injuring several officers. Nearly 10 government cars were damaged, the report said.

Police dispersed the crowd around 2pm and several protesters were slightly injured.

Shifang government has used all media channels, including Weibo microblog, radio and TV broadcast to calm public sentiment and reaffirmed its environmental protection measures in the metal processing project.
