Sewage discharge affects water supplies for 50,000
SEWAGE discharged by an aquatic farm in south China's Guangdong Province has polluted the water source of a water plant, disrupting supplies to 50,000 residents on Saturday, authorities said yesterday.
Gaoming District in the city of Foshan has taken measures to replace the losses in supply, reducing the number of affected residents to 1,000 on Sunday, said a spokesman with the district government.
Workers at the Heshui Water Plant discovered the stream was polluted on Saturday, said the spokesman.
The plant immediately suspended drawing water from the stream.
Initial Investigations showed that Yangguangkenong aquatic farm, 5 kilometers upstream of the plant, had discharged waste water into the stream.
Further investigations are under way, said officials.
